The 50 book challenge

Book lover that I am, [oh how I love to read], I was looking through the various LJ book communities on this very topic, when I happened upon one that interested me; the [info]50bookchallenge.  The rules on there were simple; read 50 books within a year. That got me thinking a little. I wondered how many I had already read within this year as I mentally counted the various book covers that have passed before me during this time period of 2008, and it's fair to say that there's been quite a few that's for sure.

Here are the books I remember reading in the year 2008 (not including my re-reads of the same book within the year 2008):

1. Poison Study - Maria V Snyder (Study series)
2. Magic Study - Maria V Snyder (Study series)
3. Fire Study - Maria V Snyder (Study series)
4. Magic Bites - Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels series)
5. Magic Burns - Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniel series)
6. The High King's Tomb - Kristen Britain (Green Rider series :p)
7. The Name of the wind - Patrick Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicles)
8. Cast in Shadows - Michelle Segara West
9. Cast in Courtlight - Michelle Segara West
10. Cast in Secret - Michelle Segara West
11. Magic lost, Trouble Found - Lisa Shearin
12. The Awakened Mage - Karen Miller
13. The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
14. The Blood King - Gail Martinez (Chronicles of a Necromancer)
15. Voice of the Gods - Trudi Canavan (Age of the Five)
16. Changer of Days - Alma Alexander
17. Blood Engines - T. A. Pratt
18. Poison Sleep - T. A. Pratt
19. Dark Lover - JR Ward (don't ask! - I saw a review on this fun blog, alas the infectious review didn't quite mean a great book in the making)

I probably have read other things but I don't remember.

I think I'm going to see how quickly I can reach that 50 book mark. I don't doubt that I would reach it sooner rather than later, bearing in mind how I used to read about 35+ in a month once upon a  time. Ha. But I would be disappointed if I don't get there by mid year, regardless of the things on my plate, both work and family wise.

How many have you read this year? Come on, take up the challenge with me, even if your reading stack screams "Fantasy" like mine.

I have barely read anything this year! I've been so bad. I keep meaning to read on my journey to work but i always end up buying the paper instead...the pull of The Guardian is too strong! I think i've read, er, two books in full this year and have read some/most of about four others. How shameful.

Ah
Oh, I haven't had to journey into London via the tubes, otherwise I'm sure I would have felt the same pull. Now I content myself with the Guardian website, though I completely understand the allure of the paper in question. :p

You should challenge yourself to read a certain number of books by the end of the year, like me (and those others on the other blog in question).

Do it!

I know I intend to update the numbers as I go along.

Re: Ah
I think i might try to just read the paper online. Another problem is that a couple of the books i'm part of the way through are enormous and i don't want to lug them to work. I must make the effort though, really.

Re: Ah
Oh, what books are they?

The only thing great about lugging my laptop rucksack around London is that I can put my book in there. Though it's annoying as hell when I have to get it out in a packed tight carriage. Arms and hands going everywhere as I try to squeeze a book out amidst the chaos. :p

Re: Ah
I've nearly finished The Mitfords: Letters Between Six Sisters (Ed. Charlotte Mosley) and Backlash: The Undeclared War Against Women by Susan Faludi, and I have started Decca: The Letters of Jessica Mitford. Also, I decided to read The Lord of the Rings again and am about two thirds through The Fellowship of the Ring. I'm terrible for having loads of books on the go at once.

Re: Ah
It sounds a bit like me. I started to read my new books, but then another came along and distracted me horribly so. I started the newer one, then another much anticipated one came along, and so on. I now have 5 new books with a matter of few pages read on each. Terrible, indeed. :\

I must admit, I had never heard of the Mitford sisters/family until you mentioned it. It's intrigued me quite a bit and I believe I can safely blame you for when I abandon yet another book as I try to appease my curiosities in relation to them. :p

[ I haven't read a single book since this entry, oh the shame ]

Re: Ah
Haha I'm totally obsessed with them now - they'd always intrigued me but then I started researching them and got a few books and now it's like full-blown obsession. I'm currently working on a post which is a sort of 'introduction' to them, which I'm submitting to the community [info]blackcigarette and will post on my own journal as well - so look out for further Mitfordia at some point this week :)

Re: Ah
I shall keep a keen eye out that's for sure. I was reading the updates on your comment section; I'm a lurker, I am. ;)

Re: dark lover number 19
I guess he was supposed to be. Alas, there was no spark between me, the reader, and this handsome ball of apparent yum. Le sigh.

Better luck next time.

After this disappointment do I read the rest of the books in the series, with it's dangerous yet hilarious named characters that fill these books? There's a small part of me that feels that a series just has to be finished regardless of the writing etcetera, but another part of me is yelling at me to not waste my time.

How the mind splits itself so.
